The founders of Borgo Syrah – both avid wine enthusiasts – are two individuals dedicated to the aesthetic of Tuscany and all its diversions. For Massimo d’Alessandro, it is the duality mutually existent in architecture and wine production – each of which encompass elements of art and science. To Pino Calabresi, drawing on aspects equally pecuniary and entrepreneurial, it’s the success of the enterprise. Aside from sharing a passion for good wine, both men are ardent collectors of art, which is one of many reasons why their twenty-year partnership remains fruitful and enduring.
Massimo d’Alessandro is a planner and designer. He is the originator of the MDAA design studio, and a faculty member at “La Sapienza” University in Rome where he teaches design. Due to his unremitting passion for art, he also founded a distinguished gallery of avant-garde art in Rome. He represents the family whose history paved the way for quality winemaking through Tenimenti d’Alessandro in Cortona.
Pino Calabresi is an entrepreneur whose well-established family founded the notable Calabresi road transport firm. He is the originator of the Rome-based finance company Ktesios, which is one of the few major private-sector firms providing consumer credit in Italy. He governed the organization for nearly two decades, until he sold his shareholdings to Merrill Lynch. He, too, played an effective part in re-launching the Tenimenti d’Alessandro label in the world of wine.
Aside from their current business commitments, these gentlemen are engaged in the venture that is Borgo Syrah. They oversee the work on the project, initiated as a means to further the beautification of the winery and the estate on which it is seated, and to enable other connoisseurs of fine wine to enjoy the privilege of ownership in any one of the property’s seven structures recently renovated or currently under restoration.
